How Does Night Vision Work?

A night vision device lets you see in low light, and in some cases complete darkness, without any external light source visible to the human eye. It does this using digital sensors, image intensifier tubes or infrared illuminators, depending on the type of device.

There are two main types. Traditional tube night vision uses an image intensifier tube to amplify the small amount of available light, such as moonlight or starlight. These devices only work at night, as daylight can damage the tube. Digital night vision uses a CCD or CMOS sensor combined with digital image processing and an infrared illuminator. Because there is no tube to protect, digital devices can be used both at night and during the day.

Popular models include the HikMicro Alpex PRO A50PL, the NocPix Nite D70R and the HikMicro Alpex A50EL.

Night Vision Scopes

Night vision riflescopes let you identify and engage quarry in the dark, and most digital models can also be used in daylight. We stock scopes across a range of magnifications and detection ranges to suit different rifles and quarry. The HikMicro Alpex Lite A40EL is a good entry point, while the HikMicro Alpex PRO A50PL and DNT Zulus 5x V2 LRF offer features such as built-in laser rangefinders and higher resolution sensors for longer-range shooting.

Handheld Night Vision

Handheld night vision monoculars are useful when you need to scan an area, observe wildlife or spot quarry before moving in. They are lighter and easier to carry than a mounted scope, and most models record images or video to internal storage or send footage over wifi. We stock handheld devices across a range of detection ranges and budgets.

Night Vision Goggles

Night vision goggles are worn on the head, leaving both hands free. This makes them well suited to walking through rough ground at night, working with dogs, or any task where you need to keep moving. We stock goggle models for both recreational and professional use.
